Hitz FM is dead, long live Hitz FM

Wow, what a blast from the past. I used to read the news as a schoolkid on the wildly successful community radio station, 89.9 Hitz FM. I also did some graphic design (poster) work for them back then too. Them were the days! In hindsight, what those guys like Nick Karlas and Andrew Gyopar did was give a really great opportunity for Melbourne kids to get involved in the media. I loved doing radio!

it wasnt nick carlas and andrew gyopar that were the brains behind hitz fm they were just riding on its coat tails…
The true brains behind it was Anton Vanderlely he had the vision he got it to air he saw the audience and he made it happen

Anton Vanderlely was the only founder of Hitz FM…..not Nick Karlas …. as he has claimed. Anton worked mercilessly to survey the youth of Melbourne and give them what they wanted to hear…. certainly not the likes of nick and Andrew Gyopar.

Anton Vanerlely came up with the idea. And what a great idea too. But he didn't have the skills turn the idea into a successful radio station. Andrew Gyopar took that idea to the next stage and built Anton's idea into a successful. But neither of them did it alone. Hitz FM wouldn't have gone anywhere without the hundreds of volunteers both on air and off air and the thousands of members and supporters.

I was lucky. I taped over 50 hours of HitzFM. I listen to it regularly…..love it…..wish they were still here. The regulators of the day just did not want to understand what people wanted. HitzFM was not just for the young, also the young at heart. I know some people over 60 who love the dance music and techno played.

you still have those tapes? would love to get them off you to digitize and put on the new hitz fm web radio, plus the hitz fm facebook page
